Why a pre-booked taxi beats the rank at Paddington
The Paddington Station black-cab rank on Praed Street is one of the busiest in London. At off-peak times you'll walk straight onto an empty cab. But at five specific periods the rank routinely runs dry: weekday mornings 07:30–09:30, weekday evenings 17:30–19:30, late-night arrivals after 23:00, England rugby international weekends at Twickenham (Paddington is the closest Tube/Overground interchange), and any service disruption on the Heathrow Express. The official black-cab rank is on Praed Street outside the main station entrance. Bishop's Bridge Road (north entrance alternative)

For business travel with expensable transport, the Express's onboard WiFi is genuinely useful. For families, groups, anyone with cruise luggage, or any post-23:45 flight, the pre-booked taxi is the only sensible choice.
Uber, Bolt and FreeNow at Paddington — what to actually expect
All three rideshare apps operate at Paddington. They have one core advantage (lower off-peak prices than a black cab) and three significant downsides for a London terminus pickup:
- Surge pricing on every problem day. Paddington-to-Heathrow has a base Uber fare of £32–£38. During morning peak, weather events, rail strikes affecting alternative airport routes, or major Twickenham/Wembley days, surge multipliers of 1.8x–3.0x are normal — taking the same journey to £58–£114. About London Paddington Station
London Paddington is one of London's 14 National Rail terminals, the western gateway to the city. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it opened on its current site in 1854 and is now a Grade I listed building, the wrought-iron-and-glass roof one of the great surviving cathedrals of the Victorian rail era.
