London Stansted (STN) is the UK’s fourth-busiest airport, handling around 28 million passengers a year from a single terminal designed by Norman Foster. It sits 35 miles northeast of central London near Bishop’s Stortford in Essex, just off the M11. Stansted is Ryanair’s largest base anywhere in the world and also serves Jet2, easyJet, Eurowings, Pegasus and a range of European and charter operators — overwhelmingly short-haul, overwhelmingly leisure, and spread across a very long operating day.

That last point shapes this route more than distance does. Stansted’s schedule is built around early-morning departures and late-night arrivals: banks of flights leaving from 06:00 and landing after 23:00 are entirely normal. A large share of the transfers we run on this route are pickups at hours when the Stansted Express is not running, has just stopped, or has not started — which is precisely when a pre-booked, flight-tracked car earns its keep.

The Stansted to Central London transfer serves leisure travellers heading to hotels across the West End and the City, families arriving with holiday luggage, groups travelling together, business travellers on European short-haul, and passengers connecting onward from a London rail terminus. Because Stansted approaches London from the northeast, destinations in the City, Shoreditch, Islington, King’s Cross and Canary Wharf are often quicker from Stansted than from Gatwick or Heathrow — a point most passengers do not expect.

The 04:00 pickup is normal here. Stansted’s first departures leave from around 06:00, and for a 06:00 flight with bag drop you are looking at a pickup from Central London somewhere between 03:30 and 04:15. The Stansted Express does not run at that hour. Night buses exist but are slow and awkward with luggage. Late arrivals are equally routine. Short-haul evening flights from southern Europe and Turkey land at Stansted well after 23:00, and delays push a meaningful share past midnight. No phone calls, no re-booking, no surcharge.

Why this matters more at Stansted than elsewhere. Heathrow and Gatwick have deeper overnight transport options and larger standing taxi ranks. Stansted at 00:45 is a quieter building with fewer alternatives, and passengers who have not pre-booked frequently find themselves choosing between a long wait and a surged app fare. Booking in advance removes that entirely.

For very early departures we recommend a confirmation call. When you book a pickup before 05:00, dispatch will confirm the exact address, the door, and the driver’s mobile number the evening before. The driver arrives 5–10 minutes early and waits. Nobody wants uncertainty at 04:00.

The City, Shoreditch and Islington. These are the natural Stansted destinations. Coming down the M11 and in from the northeast, the financial district, the Old Street tech corridor, Hoxton, Angel and Clerkenwell are reached without crossing London — frequently faster from Stansted than from Gatwick or Heathrow despite the greater mileage.

King’s Cross, St Pancras and Euston. Also on the northeast approach and quick to reach. St Pancras is the key one for Eurostar connections, and King’s Cross and Euston for onward mainline services north. If you are connecting to a train, give us the departure time at booking and we will tell you honestly whether it is realistic.

Canary Wharf and Docklands. Reached via the A12 and Blackwall approach rather than the centre. Straightforward and usually quicker than passengers expect from a northeast arrival point.

West End hotels. Soho, Covent Garden, Bloomsbury, Marylebone and Mayfair. Bloomsbury and Covent Garden come in comfortably; Mayfair and Marylebone sit slightly further across town. Some West End streets are pedestrianised or restricted for loading at certain hours, in which case the driver stops at the nearest legal point and carries the bags in.

West and southwest London. Kensington, Chelsea, Knightsbridge, Victoria and Paddington all require a full cross-town leg from the northeast and therefore sit at the upper end of the journey-time range, particularly at peak. Still a single fixed price, and still one vehicle door to door — but allow the extra time in your planning.

Beyond Central London. Stansted also sits conveniently for Cambridge, Bishop’s Stortford, Chelmsford, Colchester and the Essex and Hertfordshire commuter towns. Ask dispatch for a fixed price on any of these.

Stansted Express. Runs to Liverpool Street in around 47–50 minutes and is a good service — but only between roughly 05:30 and 00:30, and only to Liverpool Street. You then carry your luggage onto the tube or into a taxi for the final leg. For one traveller with a cabin bag going somewhere near Liverpool Street, it is an excellent choice and we will say so. For a family of four with hold luggage going to a hotel in Bloomsbury or Kensington, four fares plus the onward taxi normally exceeds our fixed price, with considerably more effort.

Coach services. National Express and others run to Victoria, Liverpool Street and Stratford around the clock, and are the cheapest option available. They are also the slowest — typically 75–120 minutes depending on route and traffic — with fixed stops rather than your actual destination, and limited luggage handling. Good for solo budget travel, poor for groups, families and anyone arriving at 01:00 tired.

Rideshare apps. Stansted’s arrival pattern — banks of short-haul flights landing together, often late at night — is exactly the condition that triggers surge pricing, and you discover the multiplier at the moment you need the car. No meet-and-greet in arrivals, no guaranteed flight tracking, and a walk to a designated pickup zone. Our price is agreed at booking and does not move.
