How to Choose an Airport Transfer An honest comparison โ€” including when not to book a car

Choosing the Best Airport Transfer

There is no single best way to get to a London airport โ€” it depends on how many of you there are, how much luggage you have, what time you are travelling and where you are going. This page sets out the real trade-offs between trains, coaches, rideshare apps, black cabs and pre-booked private hire, including the cases where we would tell you not to book a car at all. Then, if a transfer is right for you, what actually separates a good operator from a bad one. TfL licensed since 2000.

The question is not "what is best"

Every airport transfer comparison written by a transfer company concludes that you should book a transfer. This one will not, because it is not true for everybody.

The honest answer depends on four things: how many people are travelling, how much luggage you have, what time you are going, and how far your destination is from a station. Get those four straight and the right choice is usually obvious.

One person, cabin bag, daytime, staying near a station. Take the train. The Heathrow Express, Elizabeth line, Gatwick Express and Stansted Express are all fast, frequent and cheap for a single traveller. We would be a worse choice and more expensive, and we will say so on the phone if you call us.

Three or more people, hold luggage, or a late arrival, or a destination away from a station. A car is usually both easier and cheaper. Rail and coach fares are per person and multiply; a car is one price however many of you there are. Add luggage, children, or an 00:40 landing when the Tube has stopped, and it is not close.

Everything in between is a genuine judgement call, and the sections below set out the real trade-offs so you can make it yourself.

๐Ÿ‘ค Travelling Alone?

With a cabin bag in daylight, the express trains are hard to beat. Take one. We are the better answer if you have hold luggage or land after the network stops.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Three or More?

Rail fares multiply per person; our price does not. From about three people a car is usually cheaper as well as easier, and clearly so with children.

๐Ÿงณ Hold Luggage?

Two hold cases change everything โ€” stairs, gaps, escalators and interchanges all become work. This is the single most common reason people switch to a car.

๐ŸŒ™ Late or Early?

After midnight or before 05:00 the rail network is largely unavailable. Coaches run but are slow. A pre-booked car is often the only sensible option.

The Options

Every way to reach a London airport, fairly assessed

Express and mainline trains. The Heathrow Express, Elizabeth line, Gatwick Express, Thameslink and Stansted Express are genuinely good services โ€” fast, frequent and predictable, entirely unaffected by road traffic. Strengths: speed and reliability at peak, low cost for one person, no traffic risk. Weaknesses: per-person fares that multiply for families; luggage handling on stairs and gaps; almost always requiring an onward Tube or taxi at the far end; limited or no service in the small hours; and at Luton, the added complication that the station is at Parkway and requires the DART people-mover to reach the terminal. Best for: one or two adults, light luggage, daytime, destination near a station.

Coaches. National Express, Megabus and the airport coach services are the cheapest option available and run to most London airports around the clock. Strengths: lowest cost by a clear margin; some overnight services; luggage stowed in the hold. Weaknesses: slowest by a considerable distance, typically 75โ€“120 minutes plus; fixed stops rather than your destination; vulnerable to the same traffic as a car but without the flexibility to reroute; limited assistance; and hard work with young children at the end of a long day. Best for: solo budget travel where time is not pressing.

Rideshare apps. Convenient, widely used and often cheap off-peak. Strengths: low friction, no advance booking, competitive daytime pricing. Weaknesses: surge pricing that multiplies at exactly the moments you need a car most โ€” a bank of flights landing, bad weather, a venue emptying โ€” and which you discover at the moment of booking; the vehicle is whoever is nearest, so size is a lottery when you have five people and six cases; limited or no flight tracking, so a delayed arrival usually means rebooking from the baggage hall; no meet-and-greet in arrivals; and a walk to a designated pickup zone rather than a driver at the terminal exit. Best for: short notice, light luggage, off-peak, when price flexibility does not matter.

Black cabs. Excellent vehicles with drivers who have passed the Knowledge, available at every airport rank. Strengths: no booking needed, wheelchair accessible as standard, exceptional driver knowledge, and unbeatable for a spontaneous journey. Weaknesses: the meter runs while you sit in traffic, so the slowest journeys cost the most and you cannot know the fare in advance; you cannot pre-book one against a specific flight; the vehicle you get is the one at the front of the rank regardless of your luggage; and there is no name board waiting in arrivals. Best for: spontaneous journeys, wheelchair users, anyone already standing at a rank.

Pre-booked private hire. A licensed operator, booked in advance, at a price agreed before the car moves. Strengths: fixed price regardless of traffic or hour; vehicle sized to your party and luggage because we knew both when we assigned it; flight tracking with free waiting from actual landing; meet-and-greet inside arrivals with a name board; driver name, photo and registration sent in advance; delivery to your actual door. Weaknesses: you have to book ahead โ€” we are not the tool for a journey you decided on two minutes ago; and for a single traveller with a cabin bag going somewhere well served by rail, we are more expensive than the train. Best for: groups, families, hold luggage, night and early-morning travel, fixed budgets, doors that are not near a station.

If You Book a Car

Nine questions that separate good operators from bad

If a transfer is the right choice, the next question is who to book with. These are the things worth checking โ€” and they apply to any operator, not just us.

1. Are they licensed, and can they prove it? In London, an operator accepting private hire bookings must hold a TfL Private Hire Operator licence. Drivers must hold TfL private hire driver licences, which require an enhanced DBS check, a DVLA Group 2 medical and a topographical assessment. Ask. A legitimate operator will answer immediately. We have held ours continuously since 2000.

2. Is the price fixed, or is it an estimate? There is a real difference between a quoted fixed price and an "estimated fare" that moves with traffic or demand. Ask which you are being given, and whether anything can be added afterwards. Ours is fixed at booking and does not change.

3. What is actually included? The common extras are the Congestion Charge, ULEZ, airport parking and drop-off fees, waiting time and luggage. Any of these can turn a cheap headline price into an expensive final one. All are included in ours.

4. Is there a night, weekend or holiday surcharge? Many operators charge substantially more between midnight and 06:00 โ€” which is when a large share of airport journeys happen. We have no night, weekend or holiday surcharge at all.

5. Do they track flights, and how much free waiting is included? If your flight lands 90 minutes late, does the car wait, and does it cost extra? Ask how the waiting time is measured โ€” from the scheduled landing or the actual one. That distinction matters enormously. We track on live ATC data and include 60 minutes from actual landing.

6. Meet-and-greet, or a phone call from a car park? Some operators meet you inside arrivals with a name board. Others text you a bay number and expect you to find them. After a long flight with luggage, this is a bigger difference than it sounds. We meet inside arrivals.

7. Will the vehicle fit your luggage? A saloon takes roughly two large cases plus two carry-ons โ€” not a family of four returning from a fortnight away. A good operator asks about your bags before assigning a car. If nobody asks, be suspicious.

8. Do you get driver details in advance? Name, photograph, vehicle registration and a direct mobile number, sent before pickup, so you can verify the car that arrives is the one that was booked. Ours arrive by SMS two hours ahead.

9. Is there a phone number that a human answers? When a flight diverts at 01:20, an app support form is worth nothing. 020 8888 9988 reaches a UK controller at any hour.

Cost Comparison

Where the crossover actually falls

The key structural difference: rail and coach charge per person, we charge per vehicle. That single fact determines most of the cost comparison, and it means the answer changes entirely depending on how many of you there are.

One traveller. The train usually wins on cost, often by a wide margin. If you are alone with a cabin bag and staying near a station, take it โ€” we would be the more expensive choice and would tell you so.

Two travellers. Closer than most people expect once you add two rail fares plus the onward Tube or taxi at the far end. Roughly break-even on several routes, with the car ahead on convenience.

Three or more. The car is usually cheaper outright, and the gap widens with each additional passenger. Four adults paying four express fares plus an onward journey will normally exceed a single fixed transfer price.

Families. Children under five travel free on most rail services, which helps โ€” but the luggage does not care, and neither do the stairs. Families are where the practical argument overtakes the arithmetic entirely.

Do not compare the headline fare alone. A train ticket to Paddington is not a transfer to your hotel. Add the onward Tube or taxi at the far end, the DART at Luton, and any luggage fees, and compare door to door โ€” that is the only comparison that means anything.

And check what is excluded. A ยฃ45 headline transfer that adds the Congestion Charge, ULEZ, airport parking and waiting time can easily exceed a ยฃ65 all-inclusive one. The cheapest quoted price and the cheapest actual price are frequently not the same operator.

Our Answer

What we offer, measured against those nine questions

Licensed since 2000. A TfL Private Hire Operator licence held continuously for 25 years. Every driver TfL-licensed and enhanced-DBS checked, every vehicle inspected and insured for private hire. Documentation available on request.

Fixed price, agreed before the car moves. No meter, no estimate, no surge. It does not change if the traffic is bad, if your flight is late, or if the route turns out longer than expected.

Everything included. Fuel, tolls, parking, airport drop-off fees, Congestion Charge, ULEZ, waiting time as stated, complimentary water and USB charging. Nothing is added at the end.

No night, weekend or holiday surcharge. 03:00 on Christmas Day costs the same as 15:00 on a Wednesday.

Flight tracking with 60 minutes free waiting from actual landing. Not scheduled landing โ€” actual. You do not need to call us from the baggage hall.

Meet-and-greet inside arrivals with a name board, at every airport, at every hour. Luggage taken to the car.

Vehicle sized to your party. We ask about luggage before assigning a car. E-Class for two, MPV for a family with holiday bags, 8-seater for a group. Child seats free.

Driver details two hours ahead โ€” name, photograph, registration and direct mobile number by SMS.

A UK controller on 020 8888 9988 at any hour. A person, not a form.

And the honest part: if you are one person with a cabin bag heading somewhere near a station in the middle of the day, take the train. Call us and we will tell you the same thing.
